Why New Years Resolutions Usually Fail

Has anyone else noticed that the gym was packed these past few weeks and this week it’s much quieter? It’s as though people are starting to give up.

Why?

They didn’t have a plan.

Martha Beck, a brilliant psychologist from Harvard has spent years looking at why people succeed in weight loss and why others don’t. One of the things that she’s a huge advocate of is preparing your mind for success. She calls this the pre-contemplation and contemplation phases.

One of the main reasons why people fail is that they rush into taking action, but never come up with a plan. It’s like being blindfolded and randomly shooting an arrow hoping to hit a bullseye. You can imagine what would happen - one in maybe a thousand would get close. The rest would fail.

That’s what millions of you do each year. You set out to lose weight without a plan and randomly just go for it. Your mind hasn’t set up your mind properly, you haven’t crafted any direction, you don’t have rewards built in, you just aren’t ready quite yet.

Setting up your life to look entirely different requires some planning.

When you went to college you came up with a new life schedule. When you took a new job, you altered and adjusted your life to meet your new demands. When you had a baby (yes babies are on my mind CONSTANTLY) you prepared your life to meet the new demands.

Yet, when most people prepare to transform their bodies, they just jump right in!
